Okay, so just something on how to defend in different situations. I know you’re all busy and may not have the time to read this. But if you’re curious on how to tackle some sticky situations, then you might want to glance through it. Note: Applies more to a 4-on-4 game than a 5-on-5 since the role of the safety is arguably different. This is especially useful for cases where it’s a 1-on-1 (1 att on 1 def) due to a fast break from one of the opposition forwards. A 2-on-1 scenario requires more from the defender. You have a few objectives: 1. Don’t let him/her beat you. Simply put, once the person beats you, your team will have one person less between the ball and your goal. 2. Block any shot that the person makes. Or better still, don’t let the person even take a shot. 3. Direct the person away from the area in front of your goal a.k.a. the centre a.k.a. the critical zone. *I shall call it the critical zone* Of course it’d be great if you can cut any passes that the person makes, but that is not as crucial here because it ain’t a 2-on-1 situation. So any pass would likely be a back pass (teammates responsibility to intercept) How to meet the objectives: - Do not charge at the person head on. Why? By charging at the person, you only have a split second timeframe to get the ball (because you’re going in the opposite direction from him). If he taps the ball past you, or manages to ole you, you’re a goner. Also, if you ram into the person an obstruction foul may be called. - Instead, what you have to do is ABSORB a.k.a. moving backwards with one foot in front of the other and your stick fencing. While you are ‘absorbing’ your body is always between ball and goal, ready to block any shot and your stick is fencing to provoke/irritate/prod-the-ball/steal-the-ball from him. - But you shouldn’t just absorb and absorb until you backtrack into the critical zone. You have to absorb with a purpose, and that is to direct him. Direct where? To the boards and further along until he goes into your defensive corner a.k.a. lousy zone. Why? He can hardly shoot from the corner and his options are limited. Also he himself is no longer a threat until he gets out of the lousy corner. Your priority now has changed from blocking his shot to blocking his passes and preventing him from driving into the crucial zone. Also, if this was a counter attack, you basically nullified the counter by directing him into the corner as your teammates now have added time to run back (which they should have been doing when you were ‘absorbing’) So…exactly how is Absorbing done? Well, there is a drill to work on it actually and if you’re really clueless about how to Absorb, then please do ask me. (Maybe coach has done the drill already? I dunno) Directing on the other hand is easier to explain. All you have to do is to ‘Show The Way’. That is, you have to position yourself such that the ball-carrier would naturally go towards the side and into the lousy corner. This often involves placing your body a little slanted to discourage entering into the crucial zone and encourage dribbling to the lousy corner. It’s psychological really. However, always be alert. The ball-carrier may still decide that he wants to cut into the crucial zone no matter how much you psychologically dissuade him and how much you psychologically persuade him to go towards the corner. This means that you still have to be prepared to defend against that. Lastly, just to add on, charging the ball-carrier head on is not a wise decision even during a typical defense play simply because if you’re beaten, it’ll take time for you to get in front of him again (or for your teammate to step up to him) and this window of time could be all he needs to take a shot. I might write one on a 2-on-1 scenario (which is of greater interest to more people) but since I started writing this at 11:30pm, I can’t exactly continue. Just remember that doing this during 2-on-1 will not be very good unless you're a super awesome intercepter of passes so the other runner is basically rendered useless as he'll never receive a pass. Any questions, or if you see something you don’t agree with, please do bring it up for the benefit of everyone. If you want something more about attacking, you are encouraged to scream at ben or thad :)
